I woke up today and laid in my bed thinking about a story. I do this a lot, but I rarely want to actually write it. This is the story, plus a few more details, I came up with this morning. Hope ya'll enjoy :) it is depressing and could invoke some tears, so I'm warning you now.
Hazel was at her best friends party, helping her to keep up with the quests. Someone spiked the punch and others brought weed. The party was only supposed to be a small get together, but someone let it spill and now there are over a hundred people in the small house.
"Hazel! I think I just saw Nathan!" Nathan was Hazel's boyfriend of three years. She never had been so happy before or had a longer relationsip. Nathan was a football player for the school and met Hazel at one of his games. Jess had dragged her to the game to watch the football players when Hazel had become extremely anti social. Jess was Hazel's best friend and just turned 18. She is tall and has big green eyes. She has short strawberry blonde hair that looks almost brown most of the time. Hazel was slightly taller and had long, light brown hair. Her eyes were a light brown, what Jess calls hazel. Mainly because it's her name. Excitement struck Hazel as she hugged Jess. With a kiss on the cheek, she was off to go find her boyfriend. Skipping around the corner, Hazel saw the popular bitch Raquel with her new victim of the night. She watched in disgust as the guy's hands were all over Raquel's ass. Hazel rolled her eyes and began to walk away when something caught her eye. The guy's short brown hair was unmistakeable. She knew it anywhere. Hazel watched as Raquel turned around and sent an evil smile to her. Behind her was Nathan, wiping the drool from his mouth as he widened his eyes. Hazel felt her heart shatter in her chest and the water pool behind her eyes. She couldn't let them see her cry. Forcing her voice to work, Hazel let the anger consume her.
"We are THROUGH!" She yelled, yanking the necklace Nathan gave her on their anniversery and throwing it at him, hitting him in the face. Just as she went to run off, she saw the quilt in his eyes fade away as Raquel began to run her wicked fingers through his hair. Jess was at Hazel's side in a flash and herded her into her bedroom.
"Out, now!" She commanded the couple making out on her bed. They hurried to get out of the room and Jess locked the door behind her as Hazel collapsed on the bed, this time letting the tears flow. Jess sat next to her and began to stroke her best friend's hair as she cried into her chest.
"He.. was... with... R-Bitch!" Hazel sobbed into Jess's chest.
"Shhh.. Hey he's not worth it. I know how you felt about him, but just show him that you don't even care. Go out there and have a good time!" Hazel sat up and dried her eyes. If it wasn't Jess's birthday, she would have laid in here and cried but she didn't want her best friend's birthday to suck just because her heart was broken.
"That's a girl!" Jess exclaimed jumping to her feet. Jess led her to the bathroom that was connected to her room and pulled out her makeup. She also grabbed a few tissues and handed them to Hazel who greatfully took them. After blowing her nose, she splashed cold water on her face. She then dabbed it dry and sat on the toilet to let Jess do her makeup. It seemed to take hours but when Jess finished, Hazel smiled at her reflection. The crying turned her eyes greener than brown and the black eyeshadow enhanced her eyes. She jumped up and hugged Jess, squeezing her tight.
"What would I do without you?" Hazel asked, feeling slightly happy. She tried to push Nathan out of her mind as she and Jess walked out the door.
"Crash and burn." Jess joked as she bumped hips with Hazel. They walked right past Nathan, who was now alone, laughing and having a good time. Hazel watched the people begin to leave around one in the morning as she was feeling buzzed from drinking the spiked punch. After the last person left, Hazel helped Jess to clean up the house before her parents saw that it wasn't a small get together. They quickly got rid of the booze and the punch first before beginning to clean up the streamers and cups. After the house was spotless, Hazel began to grow tired.
"Hey girly, I'm gonna take off. I need to be there tomorrow to help Keith make breakfast. You know how he's lost without me." Keith was Hazel's older brother. Jess put on a pouty face as she pulled Hazel into a hug. Then, holding her at arm's length she gave her a small smile.
"Just, don't think about it okay?" Hazel nodded, but knew she was lying. She again hugged Jess before grabbing her keys and heading out the door. It was now three in the morning and Hazel lived about 45 minutes away. She thought back to the party and seeig him. He had looked guilty at first, but it had gone away after Raquel placed her hand on his knee. Hazel squeezed the steering wheel as she turned onto her road.
"Who does she think she is?! He was mine and she had to fuck with him too?" Hazel hit her steering wheel in anger and yelled. Then she felt the tears again.
"Fuck!" She cursed, turning into her driveway. She saw lights on in her barn which meant that Keith was still awake. He probably had friends over. Hazel pulled up to her house and got out of the car as Keith and four other guys came walking up. She could smell the booze already and they werent even 5 feet away yet. Hazel popped her trunk and pulled out left over pizza that Jess was just going to throw away.
"Hazel! I didn't expect you to be home tonight!" He slurred, putting his arm around her. She shrugged his arm off and pushed the pizza into his hands before slamming her trunk.
"Damn, where are you coming from?" Keith's friend, Jason asked.
"My friend's party." She spit at him and began to walk away. Keith pulled her to him, sensing something wrong.
"Was Nathan there?" He asked his sister, now sounding a little bit more sober. She felt a twinge in her heart at the sound of his name.
"Yeah, with his hands and mouth all over Raquel. I dumped his ass." She felt a lump form in her throat at the sound of her voice talking about the recent heartbreak. Keith pulled her into a hug as the other guys gave each other looks.
"Go change, then meet us at the barn. I wanna make you feel better. You're gonna party with us!" Keith's version of partying was drinking until you puked which was something Hazel did not want. She tried to decline, but was pushed into the house. With a sigh, she let her pink and black lace dress pool around her feet. She stared at it, wanting to curl up and cry herself to sleep. Instead, she kicked it under her bed, never wanting to see it again. Hazel yanked on some loose jeans and pulled a tank top over her head. She went into the bathroom and noticed her makeup was still perfect and walked outside where James was waiting to escort her. Hazel had always had a major crush on James and seeing him sitting on the porch steps waiting made her broken heart beat a little faster.
"It's too soon." She thought in her head as she smiled at him. He embraced her and kissed her head.
"Any guy that cheats on you is an idiot." He whispered, placing his arm around her shoulder. She tried to get out of it, but relaxed when he began to pull her toward the barn. When they were about to enter, headlights washed over them. Hazel watched as the car raced up her drive. She immediately knew it was Nathan. James felt her shiver despite the heat and gave her a concerned look. She forced a smile.
"I wanna talk to him alone. He probably didn't understand." He nodded, but watched her as she approached her now ex-boyfriend.
"What do you want!?" She yelled at the now stranger who started walking to her. He completely ignored her question and pointed at James.
"Who the fuck is that?" He yelled back, shocking her. She crossed her arms and walked back to the house, knowing he will follow her. She didn't want him to embarass her near James.
"That is my brother's friend. Why are you here? You need to leave." Nathan's face softened when he saw her in the light of the porch. Hazel felt another shiver go down her back. She still loved him and wanted to cuddle and watch movies with him like they did when she was sick. He reached out and grabbed her wrists.
"Hazel, it wasn't my fault. She came and sat on my lap. She was kissing me." Hazel tried to pull away, but failed.
"You liar! I saw you. I watched you with your hands all over her!" Angry tears fell down her face as she again tried to pull her wrists from his hands. When he resisted and pulled her against him, Hazel began to freak out. She jerked her knee into his crotch which made him release her immediately. She began to back up when he glared at her. He stood up and angrily began to walk up to her. Hazel felt trapped and punched him in the face, hitting him between his eye and his nose. He yelled in anger as his fist went up. Hazel was not fast enough and went down when his fist connected with her left eye. All her weight landed on her left hip, making her cry out. She slid about a foot on her arms and scraped her head on the cement. She didn't see that Keith and his buddies were beating the crap out of Nathan. James helped Hazel to her feet and into the house. Everything was a blur to her as James laid her on the couch. He brought back ice and asked her where it hurt. She placed her hand on her eye which James immediately pulled back.
"Shh, you're gonna be okay. Keith will make sure nothing else happens to you." James whispered, cleaning up Hazel's bloodied arms. Keith walked in followed by his friends.
"Is she alright?" He asked, coming to his siter's side. James said something that Hazel didn't catch as she slipped into unconciousness. Keith knew that James had been crushing on his sister for a while now and told him to wait until she was 18. Which she has been for a while, but then she and Nathan met. Before Keith went to bed, he told James to watch out for her for the night and he went into his room. The other guys were passed out drunk in the barn and would most likely not be seen until 10 the next morning. Hazel awoke when James switched the ice packs.
"Hey, sorry. Go back to sleep." Hazel closed her eys but shook her head. She sat up against James begging her not to. She winced at the pain in her hip as she sat up. She reached for the remote to turn the television on and James handed it to her. She turned on her favorite T.V. show and patted the couch behind her.
"I don't wanna be alone... I'm scared." James heard the tremor in her voice and quickly sat down. He gently pulled her back and she snuggled up close. Within a few minutes she was asleep again. James settled down and fell asleep with the weight of Hazel asleep on her. The next morning Hazel awoke on James and slowly got up. She ignored the pain of her hip and limped to the bathroom. She looked in the mirror and saw her left eye surrounded by a deep, purple and black bruise. It was swollen and it hurt to touch it. She then pulled her jeans down slightly and saw a darker and scarier looking bruise on her hip. She gently ran her fingers along it and winced when her fingers came across something sticking out.
"Does it hurt?" Hazel jumped, startled at James's voice. She nodded as he held out another ice pack. She placed it and shyly looked at him.
"Thanks." She whispered. She looked down again, remembering how awful she now looked. James tilted her head up and made her look at him.
"You're beautiful inside and out. By the way," James held out her phone. "Someone named Jess keeps calling you." Hazel's eyes widened.
"Crap, I need to go." She grabbed her phone and quickly limped outside. James stopped her just as she got to her car.
"Where are you going?" He asked her.
"I promised my best friend I would take her to a car show today. I'm late." Hazel ducked inside her car and ignored the pain she felt on her hip as she yanked her car in reverse. James stared at her with a worried look. Hazel ignored that and sped down the road. Her mind was foggy as she tried to remember everything from the previous night. Before she knew it, she was at Jess's house. She knocked on the door, unsure of how to face her best friend looking like this. She knew she would have to explain it. When Jess opened the door, her face turned from anger to shock. She pulled Hazel inside and stared at her.
"What happened!?" She whispered loudly. Hazel figured that her parents were home now. Jess snuck Hazel into her bedroom and made her explain everything. She began working her makeup skills and magically made the black eye disappear. Instead of going to the car show, Jess and Hazel stayed in her room and practiced walking without a limp. Hazel ended up spending the night so she could go to school easier the next day. Hazel's dad said it was alright and wanted to make sure she was doing okay. Hazel made Keith swear not to tell him, which he didn't.
The next day at school, Hazel went straight to her classes. Her hip still hurt like hell, but she hid it the best she could. Jess had graduated already had to go to work, so Hazel felt truly and utterly alone. At lunch, Hazel kept her head down to avoid Nathan and was walking to the restroom when a hand stopped her. She looked up and it confirmed her fear; Nathan. His face was bruised and his lip was split open. Unlike her, he didn't try to hide it.
"Hm, you look pretty." He said and pulled her in for a kiss. She refused and pushed him away.
"Baby, what's wrong?" He asked, shock filling his voice.
"I'm not your baby, leave me alone." She tried to get around him when he pushed her against the wall.
"I know we had a little misunderstanding, but c'mon. I love you!" The words that used to mean so much to her now left her ears ringing. She tried to push him away, but he stayed right next to her. He was gripping her wrists in his hands so tight that Hazel thought he was going to break them. Just as Nathan began kissing her neck, Mr. Tyler the Vice Principal came around the corner. Nathan threw Hazel's hands back as Mr. Tyler yelled at them. Hazel thought she saw shock in his eyes when he looked at her face. She knew she had smudged the makeup, which was why she was headed to the bathroom.
"Hazel, can I see you in my office?" He asked, sounding very authorative. She kept her head down as he shut the door. He crouched in front of her. Mr. Tyler was a very attractive man. He was tall and had bright blue eyes. He was sweet and caring, yet strict. Everybody in the school loved him and it was clear why. Hazel felt the tears burning her eyes as she avoided the question. She asked how his wife was. He played along and went to sit in his chair. Finally, Hazel spit it out. About the party, about at her house...
"Hazel, I promise you that I will make sure he does not come around you again on school grounds. This is your last year here and I will make sure it does not end on a bad note." Hazel could not help the smile that spread across her face. Mr. Tyler made her feel safe and happy. When you look at him, you have to be in a pretty bad mood to not smile. The next day, Hazel felt the eyes of the teachers on her. She felt better, but hoped Mr. Tyler did not explain why they had to watch her. After a couple days without anything bad happening, Hazel began to carpool with her dad. He got out of work late so Hazel stayed at school longer and got everything done so she didn't have to worry about it at home. One day while she was walking to her car, she bumped her hip against the gate, making her cry out in pain. It still hurt and bumping it was not going to help. She began walking to her car when she saw his. Nathan's car was sitting in the parking lot close to hers. She began walking to her car quickly and hoped that her crying out had not caught anyone's attention. Hazel threw her backpack in the car anc quickly began to leave when she saw his car behind her. He was smiling in the driver's seat.
"Shit!" She exclaimed and began to weave her way through the parking lot. Parents were now crowding the lot as they were picking their children up from practice. Hazel looked in her rear view mirror and saw Nathan getting closer to her. Without looking, she cut off a car and race down the road to her father's work. Nathan ended up cutting off the same car and following Hazel. He began to tailgate her since he had a faster car. Neither Nathan nor Hazel realized that the car they had cut off had been Mr. Tyler's.
He immediately followed them and dialed 911 while following the two vehicles. He watched helplessly as hazel tried to get away from Nathan, but had no chance. As they grew closer to where Hazel was headed, a traffic light was turning from green to yellow. Hazel stepped on her gas and accelerated, hoping Nathan would not follow which he did not. He ended up stopping at the red light. Mr. Tyler watched Hazel's car as it went around a glass building and he made his way over to her, avoiding the same path she had taken. When he spotted her car, he caught her quickly walking around the corner. He parked next to her car as to hide it and followed her into the building. He tapped her on the shoulder, making her jump. She hugged him tightly with tears in her eyes.
"Help me... get my.. dad!" She choked out through sobs. Mr. Tyler and Hazel went up to a lady sitting at a desk and asked for Hazel's father.
"Tell him that it's an emergency!" Mr. Tyler shouted after the lady. Hazel had stopped crying and had settled down slightly when they heard the bell above the door ring. Hazel's blood ran cold as she looked up.
"Thought you could run away, did ya?" Mr. Tyler looked up in time to see Nathan pull the safety back from the gun. He jumped up to wrestle the gun from his hands when two shots rang out. Both of them hit Hazel.
John, Hazel's father, came running around the corner in time to see the scene unfold in front of him. His daughter's ex-boyfriend holding a gun and the school Vice Principal trying to wrestle a gun from his hands. He rushed forward as his daughter went down clutching her stomach.
"Hazel!" He yelled. He pulled Mr. Tyler from Nathan and punched Nathan in the face, knocking him out. John knelt next to his daughter and held her head in his hands. Police came rushing in just as Nathan awoke from unconsciousness. John was reassuring his daughter that everything would be alright when blood began to flow from her mouth.
Mr. Tyler watched in horror as the father began to scream for help. He watched a smart and talented girl go limp in her father's arms. Tears came to his eyes when the paramedics came and had to drag John away from his daughter. He tried to fight, but was outmatched. Mr. Tyler talked to the police as he watched the ambulence hurry down the road. A former student, Jess, hurried in the door and looked at John who was covered in blood. Her face went from worry to pure horror as she collapsed onto the ground, crying. She cried for her best friend. Her best friend that she would never see alive again.
